Description
The Colorado River is one of the most prominent and important river systems in North America. Ephemeral, seasonal, and persistent riparian habitats are found throughout the basin, which host some of the most important vegetative communities for wildlife species in the predominantly arid landscape. Despite supporting up to 80% of terrestrial animals in the western US and providing critical migration corridors, riparian ecosystems cover less than 5% of the land area and are often the most threatened ecosystems in southwest. Given the size and diversity of the Colorado River Basin, the numerous and disparate management strategies, and the ecological concerns accompanying tamarisk and Russian olive, there remains the need to explore and develop methods to map native and non-native riparian vegetation and change over time.
