"I have been a career adviser at a global high-tech company for more than 15 years. Employees from different parts of the world have reached me for career guidance. No matter where they are, the desire of owning their career is unanimous. To reach more employees, I designed a course called Career Ownership and have been teaching it regularly. In addition, since I have been regularly part-time teaching at universities for the last 20 years, many students sought career development advices from me as well. It is extremely rewarding to see my advisees and students achieving great accomplishments in their careers. With the intention of helping more people to be successful in their careers, I wrote this book. This book is organized by six sessions modeled after how I design advising sessions when an individual approaches me. Session 1 provides an overview of career development and offers a general direction for an individual through the TOP model. Session 2 guides an individual to plan his or her career by mapping out the short-term, mid-term and long-term activities. Session 3 presents time management tactics to help an individual to make time for career advancement. These tactics are quite different from conventional time management practices and most people find my system quite unique and useful. Session 4 offers tips for an individual to effectively develop, prioritize and execute tasks, leading to the individual exceeding their manager's expectations. Session 5 helps an individual gain intelligence and sensitivity in managing the work environment, which includes managing peer relations, working with superiors and navigating difficult situations. Finally, Session 6 highlights the need for continuous education and recommends methods for effective learning. This session is based on the lessons I learned from attending schools for 35 years, from grade school to multiple doctorate programs, plus teaching at universities for the past 20 years.
